Meeting Times & Places

Trips are posted on the TSA Calendar, announced on the Texascavers mailing list, and are typically held on the first weekend of the month. Government Canyon State Natural Area is located on the northwest outskirts of San Antonio, Texas.

Directions to the gate of GCSNA: (Map)

Take Loop 1604 around the NW side of San Antonio and exit at Shaenfield Rd. Take Shaenfield northwest (outside the loop) 1.6 miles to the light at Rt. 1560. Go straight through onto Galm Rd and drive 2 miles to the roundabout and the gate of GCSNA. Enter at the gate and then take the first right. There is an automated gate with a keypad for entry. The code can be obtained by contacting the project coordinator. Continue through the gate to the Volunteer/Research Station (old bunk house), where we will meet in the parking lot.

Contact Marvin Miller for special access information if you cannot be there on time.

To find, explore, survey, and inventory the caves and karst features in Government Canyon State Natural Area. Eighty-six caves have been found to date. Most are small, but the beautiful terrain and the reasonable potential for something large keep cavers coming each trip. The longest cave is 366.6 meters long and the deepest is 32.4 meters deep. This is a good training environment and everyone interested is welcome. The Project is sponsored by the TSA and Texas Speleological Survey. Detailed reports of all trips are filed in the TSS library.
